Council Member Fernandez Collision Cases Postponed Until 2020

The criminal case against Calexico City Council Member Rosie Fernandez stemming from two traffic collisions was continued on Nov. 26 to Jan. 13 for a pre-trial conference before Superior Court Judge Monica Lepe-Negrete.

On Nov. 12, Fernandez, through defense attorney Eduardo Rivera, pleaded not guilty to four misdemeanor charges in an out-of-court “window arraignment” at the court’s criminal division office. That allowed her to avoid appearing in person at a scheduled Nov. 13 arraignment.

On Nov. 26, the cases were assigned to Lepe-Negrete. Fernandez did not appear in court with Rivera.

She is charged with two counts of driving-under-the-influence of alcohol in connection with a July 6 collision near Heber. She also faces two counts of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage in connection with a May 5 crash in Calexico.

After the new court date was set, Rivera, approached outside the courtroom, declined comment. Fernandez also did not respond to requests for comment.
