CALEXICO — Calexico Mayor Bill Hodge may be hoping the third time will be the charm is his quest to name his appointee to a key city commerce panel.
In a Nov. 18 interview, the mayor said he intended to appoint Jaime D. Jimenez, marketing manager for Mexicali television station Canal 66, to the Business Improvement District board. The station has an office on Imperial Avenue and Hodge said he wanted to balance board members between downtown and Imperial Avenue.
Hodge said he had not
spoken to Jimenez about the appointment.
When the time came for Hodge
to make his choice at the Nov. 20 city council meeting he did not do so, gave
no immediate explanation and made no mention of who else he was considering.
He was not available
later for comment.
Hodge previously attempted to appoint Louis
Wong, owner of Yum Yum Chinese Food, to the BID board at the Nov. 6 council meeting.
That was thwarted when Calexico
resident and former council member Joong Kim pointed out Wong is an elected
official serving on the Imperial Valley College board. Kim said — and the
city attorney agreed — elected officials cannot sit on appointed commissions
The BID promotes the
business community through special events, advertising, business attraction,
and funding improvements to commercial areas, including lighting and painting.
It has about 400 members that pay $100 annual fee.
