Even a week prior to the
traditional Black Friday start of the holiday shopping season, downtown
Calexico was bustling Nov. 22 with excitement high for the upcoming holidays
and heavy traffic to match.
Store owners said they were
pleased with the upward trend of business that accompanies the holidays and
optimistic about sales for the rest of the winter shopping season.
“Right now we are starting to improve our numbers and we are preparing for Christmas,” said Priscilla Flores, manager of the Jerusalem’s shop.
“Next week, all of our holiday sales will
begin. The best way to find out about our sales is to come to the store in
person so you can find the best deals on the specific items you are looking for,”
Iconic Store Busy
Garlan’s, an iconic downtown Calexico clothing store, had a consistent flow of customers.
“Business has been very
good. We already have our pre-Black Friday sale underway in which we offer 25
percent off everything in the store,” manager Roselia Hernandez said.
Garlan’s has a surprise
promotion for Christmas that shoppers will have to wait to find out more about.
“This is the time of year
when we do the most business. Don Roberto Jewelry doesn’t do any special
discounts for the holidays because their jewelry is always discounted,” she
said. “I think every year we do better than the previous year at this store. I
am positive that this will be a profitable season for storeowners in downtown
Terry Sierras manages Valencia Jewelers and explained, “Business is a little slow, but I am sure it will pick up during Thanksgiving week.”
specializes in wedding rings.
“Everything in our store
will be discounted 25-50 percent starting Black Friday, which makes this the
best time of year for a wedding proposal,” Sierras added.
Gran Plaza Outlook
The Gran Plaza Outlets held its Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 22. The outlet mall’s marketing director, Angel Esparza, said he is enthusiastic about sales this year.
“There has been an
increase in sales the past few years at the outlets. Last year it was 6 percent.
This year we had a 12-percent increase in overall sales,” he said.
Gran Plaza is among the
locations where Black Friday will begin early.
“We are expecting a lot
of shoppers on Thursday (Thanksgiving) night. So, we will have many events
throughout the week, including live music, to celebrate the holidays,” he
Esparza offered a few
tips for shoppers at the outlets: “If you are thinking about shopping
throughout the holiday season, invest a little bit on big savings cards for
individual stores and you will receive additional savings.”
Black Friday starts at 7
a.m. on Friday at the outlets.
“Most stores are really
well stocked, so people do not need to show up early to find the items they are
shopping for,” Esparza said.
